Restylane is the first FDA approved soft tissue filler made of biodegradable non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid, and as such does not require a skin test before treatment. It is not permanent, but may last for 6 months or longer, which is considerable longer than the previously commonly used bovine collagen. Restylane has been safely used in Europe and Canada for years. Restylane requires local anesthesia (numbing medicine) to be comfortable when injected around the mouth.
COLLAGEN
Collagen is a fibrous layer of protein, which supports the skin. As we age the collagen breaks down causing wrinkles and lines to appear in the skin. Zyderm and Zyplast collagen are natural substances derived form highly purified bovine collagen, which is injected into these lines and wrinkles just below the skin surface. Immediate results can be seen after collagen is injected and the results can last form 3 to 6 months. Just like natural collagen, injectable collagen eventually breaks down, so on going treatments are necessary to maintain the results you desire. Collagen can also be used to enhance the fullness of the lips. Before beginning your collagen treatment, a simple skin test is performed on your forearm to see if you develop sensitivity. You will have to watch the area for four weeks before you have your first treatment. Approximately 97% of men and women tested have no reaction to the skin test and are able to proceed with the treatment. Although you might have slight redness, bruising, or swelling at the injection sites, this should resolve within a few hours.
